Considerations
Before you start on your search or approach any of the facilities,
think about the following:
• Do you want to remain in a particular geographic region? It can
be quite difficult to get production space close to where you
live with waiting lists common, and it will be important that you
understand that you may have to travel some distance in order
to find a suitable and available facility
• Are you happy to work in a shared kitchen, or do you need a
“key to the door” unit of your own? If you are opting for your
own “key to the door” production unit, make sure that you
have already built-up sales before you take the unit and start
incurring rent
• Think about the size of the unit that you might need and if there
are any specific requirements e.g., you may require a licenced
facility, chill or freezer storage
• What additional supports beyond the space do you require?
e.g., access to a meeting room, additional storage space etc.
• What is the limit to the budget you will be able to pay monthly
for the space required? Some facilities offer flexibility to new
tenants and can support them with “stepped up” rental costs to
allow the producer time to grow their sales
• What time of day do you require to use the space or do you
require 24 hour access, as this can vary from site to site?
